Howells-Dodge 3-2 in last five matches
The Howells-Dodge Jaguars continue to play up and down volleyball as they are 3-2 over their last five matches, defeating Oakland-Craig 3-2 at home last Thursday, beating Cross County 2-1 and Clarkson/Leigh 2-0 at the Clarkson Tourney on Saturday, losing 2-0 to David City Aquinas, also at the Clarkson Tourney, and losing 3-0 at Stanton on Tuesday.
The Jaguars took set one from the Knights 25-20, dropped sets two and three 25-23 and 25-12, but rebounded to win sets four and five 25-17 and 15-10.
Kalli Brester led the way with 21 kills and 16 digs while Sam Brester had 9 kills. Mallory Rolf totaled 7 kills and 18 digs while Kara Brichacek registered 7 kills. Macey Kulhanek totaled 22 digs while Shelby Hegemann and Tessa Brester notched 22 and 15 set assists, respectively.
Howells-Dodge lost set one to the Monarchs 25-13, and dropped set two 27-25.
Kalli Brester notched 8 kills and 7 digs while Kulhanek totaled 8 digs.
The Jaguars defeated the Patriots 25-14 in set one, and 25-18 in set two.
Kalli Brester compiled 8 kills while Rolf had 7. Kulhanek posted 9 digs while Hegemann and Tessa Brester recorded 11 set assists apiece.
Howells-Dodge won set one over the Cougars 25-10. The Jaguars lost set two 25-17, but rebounded to win set three 25-11.
Kalli Brester registered 12 kills and 12 digs while Rolf had 9 kills and 10 digs. Sam Brester notched 9 kills while Kulhanek totaled 17 digs. Tessa Brester and Hegemann dished out 23 and 14 set assists, respectively.
Howells-Dodge dropped set one to the Mustangs 25-11, lost set two 25-16, and fell in set three 25-22.
Kalli Brester and Kulhanek posted 8 and 7 digs, respectively. Hegemann notched 9 set assists while Tessa Brester recorded 7.
The Jaguars showed how good a team they can be by knocking off Oakland-Craig, but inconsistency has been the story of Howells-Dodge's season so far.
The Jaguars (12-6) take part in the Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family Invite on Saturday.
Howells-Dodge will see the likes of Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family and Clarkson/Leigh in this tournament.
The Jaguars need to be on top of their game to have a good showing at this tournament.
Howells-Dodge has done no worse than 2-1 in Saturday tournaments this year so I look for the Jaguars to at least repeat that effort on Saturday.
3-0 is definitely possible if Howells-Dodge is on top of their game.
The biggest thing for the Jaguars, in my opinion, is being ready to play. It appears Howells-Dodge came out flat against David City Aquinas, and the Jaguars were never able to recover in that match.
Howells-Dodge has to be ready to go in every match they play. Slow starts have and are going to hurt this team.
Kalli Brester needs to continue to play at a high level offensively while other players have to continue to step up and produce offensively and defensively for this squad.
Multiple players have stepped up for the Jaguars this season, sometimes at different times, sometimes at the same time, so now it's a matter of getting them to step up at the same time all the time.
Howells-Dodge needs consistent, solid production from everyone each time out.
There's still time for this Jaguars' team to make a run, but the journey starts on Saturday. Howells-Dodge needs to play well this weekend if they want to make a run at the state tournament.
