Wisner-Pilger wins season opener over Schuyler
The Wisner-Pilger Volleyball team opened its 2019 season with a 3-0 win at home vs Schuyler on Thursday night, August 29, in action heard on 107.9 The Bull.
The Gators raced out to an early lead, taking the first two sets 25-11 and 25-15.
Schuyler came out hot in the third set, and got off to a 5-2 lead before the Gators called timeout to talk things over.
Wisner-Pilger then scored 8 unanswered points to take a 10-5 lead, and would go on to win the final set 25-10.
Aspin Waterman had 10 kills and 10 digs while Rachel Otten totaled 8 kills. Adi Meyer added 19 set assists while Erin McGuire had 8.
Head Coach Jean Groth. "I think probably our main focus tonight being the first match of the year was to try and maintain ball control with our first contact. And I thought that really allowed us to get into our offense really well. And Schuyler had difficulty getting into offense."
Groth felt serving was the best aspect of the team's play.
The Gators begin the season 1-0, and are off until hosting the Northeast Nebraska Volleyball Classic September 5-7, where they will meet Wakefield-Allen (0-0) and West Point-Beemer (0-3).
I think the Gators have a great chance to beat both teams.
The Cadets have really struggled in the early season, and the Trojans have yet to play a match.
I thought Wisner-Pilger was very impressive Thursday night, and look for the Gators to continue that type of play this coming Thursday.
Schuyler was a good tune up for Wisner-Pilger, but I feel Wakefield-Allen and West Point-Beemer may be tougher and better teams.
The Gators should beat both regardless, but Wisner-Pilger has to come ready to play Thursday night.
This is a tournament a veteran team like Wisner-Pilger can definitely win.
It's also the type of tournament you envision yourself winning if you are to win Sub-State and make the State Tournament.
The Gators certainly have the team to do great things this year, but Wisner-Pilger has to win the matches they're supposed to, which includes both of Thursday night's matches.
The Gators have to defend their home court, and show both teams why they're more superior.
Wisner-Pilger is a great team, there's no denying that, but the Gators can't afford to falter against either team Thursday night.
Wisner-Pilger has to be ready and raring to go, and must play up to their full potential against both squads.
Waterman, Otten, Meyer, and McGuire all need to step up and play well again for the Gators.
It needs to be a complete team effort from Wisner-Pilger in order for the Gators to be successful.
Wisner-Pilger has to stay focused, and must keep their eye on the prize in this tournament.
The Gators can't worry about or focus on what's coming up after this....Wisner-Pilger has to focus on the present and what they can do in this tournament.
The Gators can do anything they put their minds to, they just have to believe and go out there and play their game and execute.
