Howells-Dodge goes 2-2 at East Husker Conference Tournament; falls at North Bend Central
The Howells-Dodge Volleyball Team is 2-3 in their last five matches, falling 2-0 at home to Twin River Thursday night in the first round of the East Husker Conference Tournament before beating Tekamah-Herman 2-0 in their other match Thursday night. The Jaguars lost 2-0 to West Point-Beemer, but beat Logan View/Scribner-Snyder 2-1 at the Tournament at North Bend Central on Saturday.
The Titans downed the Jaguars 26-24 in set one and 25-16 in set two.
Erin Prusa had 9 kills while Taya VanLengen registered 11 digs. Grace Kreikemeier added 8 digs while Alyssa Coufal had 12 set assists.
The Jaguars downed Tekamah-Herman 25-15 in set one and 25-13 in set two.
Prusa finished with 9 kills while VanLengen totaled 12 digs. Coufal posted 16 set assists.
Howells-Dodge lost 25-21 in sets one and two to the Cadets.
Prusa tallied 8 kills while VanLengen notched 11 digs. Coufal registered 10 set assists.
The Raiders took set one 25-16 before the Jaguars won set two 25-20 and set three 25-22.
Prusa led the way with 12 kills while Jessi Brester posted 8 kills and 8 digs. VanLengen and Kreikemeier added 15 and 9 digs, respectively, while Coufal had 27 set assists.
Howells-Dodge lost set one to North Bend Central 25-22, set two 27-25, and set three 25-16.
Prusa finished with 8 kills while VanLengen recorded 14 digs. Brester added 7 digs while Coufal chipped in 20 set assists.
I thought Howells-Dodge played well in the Conference Tournament, but really struggled at North Bend Central Tuesday night for whatever reason.
The Jaguars (15-12) take on Tekamah-Herman (2-25) on the road Thursday night in action that can be heard on 107.9 the Bull.
The Tigers lost 3-0 at Fremont Bergan Tuesday night.
This match can go one of two ways:
If Howells-Dodge is on top of their game like they were in the Conference Tournament then they should sweep this match.
But if the Jaguars play like they did against North Bend Central Tuesday night then this match could get interesting.
Tekamah-Herman took North Bend Central to five sets earlier this season so anything can certainly happen.
Howells-Dodge has to be on top of their game and play well Thursday night.
Prusa has to have a good game hitting the ball, and Coufal has to keep feeding it to her.
Brester has to step up too, and VanLengen and Kreikemeier have to continue to be consistent.
A handful of players have really carried this Jaguar squad this year, but it would be nice to see some different players step up too.
Howells-Dodge is certainly a team to be reckoned with when they're on top of their game, but the Jaguars have been scuffling late in the season.
I thought Howells-Dodge regained some of their form in the Conference Tournament, but then lost it again Tuesday night.
Perhaps the Jaguars will regain it again Thursday night and keep it for good.
Howells-Dodge has Pender and West Point-Beemer at home Tuesday night to conclude the regular season, two matches that are very winnable.
If the Jaguars can get this one with the Tigers then I think wins over the Pendragons and Cadets are possible.
If Howells-Dodge struggles on Thursday though then I think that could carry and linger over into Tuesday.
Good play breeds good play, and the Jaguars have to play their best Thursday night.
First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on the Bull.
