Clarkson/Leigh sweeps Humphrey St. Francis, goes 2-1 at Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family Round Robin

The Clarkson/Leigh Volleyball Team won 3-0 at home over Humphrey St. Francis Thursday night before going 2-1 at the Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family Round Robin on Saturday, beating Howells-Dodge and Twin River 2-0, but losing 2-0 to the host Bulldogs.

The Patriots won set one 25-17, set two 25-14, and set three 25-19 over the Flyers.

Ashlynn Novotny had 16 kills while Hannah Kasik added 11 kills and 11 digs. Halee Steffensmeier notched 9 digs while Kaegan Held registered 7 digs and 34 set assists.

Clarkson/Leigh defeated the Jaguars 25-14 in the opening set, and 25-18 in the second set.

Novotny totaled 14 kills while Held posted 22 set assists.

The Patriots fell 25-22 in set one to Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family, and dropped set two 28-26.

Kasik recorded 11 kills and 13 digs while Novotny compiled 8 kills. Steffensmeier added 26 digs while Held chipped in 14 digs and 25 set assists. Sara McEvoy contributed 8 digs.

Howells-Dodge defeated the Titans 25-21 in sets one and two.

Novotny tallied 12 kills while Kasik posted 8. Steffensmeier had 10 digs while Holly Kuhr posted 8. Held dished out 24 set assists.

Head Coach Becky Schneider says having Kasik back in the lineup after missing all of last year due to injury has really made a big difference. "We have everyone back but one, so adding Hannah back into our lineup is the cherry on top! She has such a passion for the sport, and missing out on being on the floor last year and us being so successful, she definitely wants to experience that and say that she helped get us there! Not only does she bring power and adds to our offensive threats, she is a great defensive player as well. She works hard, hustles, and makes plays. She's definitely a great asset to our team! "

Clarkson/Leigh (18-6) opens up East Husker Conference Tournament play on Thursday at home against Madison.

The Patriots defeated the Dragons 2-0 at the Madison Triangular on August 30th.

I don't think Clarkson/Leigh will have much trouble beating Madison.

Oakland-Craig could be a threat if they get past Logan View/Scribner-Snyder though.

Schneider says the Patriots have done some really good things so far this season, but their work is not done yet. "We need to be playing our best volleyball at this point in the season. We've had a great season so far and have had lots of experiences with some very competitive teams, some we've beat and we didn't beat. We've got to learn to those losses so we are not making the same mistakes from here on out! We've got a great seeding and great pairings, that if we can keep taking steps forward and play Patriot volleyball, we should be able to dominate and give us a chance to go for first."

It really has been a nice season for Clarkson/Leigh so far as the Patriots have knocked off some pretty good teams on their schedule, but at the same time have lost to the great teams.

Schneider says things have gone really well for the most part. "The season has been going really well for us! There were a few games that we felt we could have have won. The Aquinas game being one of those at our home tournament. It was a great battle, but for whatever reason, we just couldn't finish that third set. I felt we didn't play our best game against LHNE. That game we never got into a good rhythm which in turn, we didn't give ourselves a chance and that was a game we probably could have won! But overall, we are doing the things we need to be doing and taking care of business!"

Perhaps Clarkson/Leigh will make a run in the tournament and upset Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family or someone like that.

Upsets happen all the time, and both teams have to watch out for the upset bug, but I think both teams have what it takes to matchup on Saturday in the Semifinals.

I think the Patriots have a good shot to at least finish 3rd in this tournament if not better.

The ultimate goal is to win it of course, and that can happen, but Stanton and Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family are very good teams.

Clarkson/Leigh has seen both teams enough though that they should be able to give them both good matches at the very least should they face them.

The Patriots can't overlook Madison and the LVSS/Oakland-Craig winner though.

Clarkson/Leigh has a big night ahead of them on Thursday.
