Stanton starts season 4-1
The Stanton Mustangs are off to a respectable start as they went 2-0 in the Madison Triangular on Thursday before going 2-1 at the Shamrock Invite on Saturday.
Stanton knocked off Madison and Clarkson/Leigh 2-0 on Thursday.
The Mustangs downed the Dragons 25-12 in set one and 25-6 in set two.
Mackenzie Brandl had 14 digs while Hilary Huss notched 7. Bree Burtwhistle totaled 10 assists.
Stanton downed the Patriots 25-16 in set one, and 25-12 in set two.
Mackenzie Brandl compiled 14 digs while Jessie Brandl added 12. Huss recorded 7 digs and 11 assists. Burtwhistle dished out 10 assists.
The Mustangs defeated Columbus Lakeview and Twin River 2-0 on Saturday, but lost 2-0 to Columbus Scotus.
Stanton took care of the Titans 25-17 in set one, and 25-15 in set two.
Huss put down 11 kills and had 10 digs. Mackenzie Brandl totaled 14 digs while Burtwhistle added 13 digs and 12 assists. Jessie Brandl chipped in 8 digs.
The Mustangs downed the Vikings 25-23 in the first set, and 25-22 in the second set.
Burtwhistle had 7 kills, 7 digs, and 9 assists for Stanton. Mackenzie Brandl paced the Mustangs in digs with 25. Jessie Brandl notched 10 digs while Huss totaled 10 digs and 12 assists.
Stanton struggled against Scotus, losing the opening set 25-7, and the second set 25-19.
Huss led the way with 12 digs and 8 assists. Mackenzie Brandl and Jessie Brandl had 11 digs apiece while Burtwhistle recorded 9 digs.
The Mustangs played superb volleyball last week with the exception of the Scotus match. I don't know what it is about the Shamrocks, but they have a knack for beating Stanton. I think a lot of it is mental on the Mustangs' part. Perhaps Stanton tightens up when they take on Scotus.
The good news is the Mustangs won't have to deal with the Shamrocks in the postseason. This should be the only match up of the season between Stanton and Scotus.
The Mustangs (4-1) get ready for the Wakefield Tournament, which is being held Thursday-Saturday.
The host Trojans are just 1-4 on the season, having lost to Wisner-Pilger, Oakland-Craig, Wayne, and Fremont Bergan 2-0 in the Northeast Nebraska Tournament last week. Wakefield's lone win is over Scribner-Snyder, a team Wakefield beat 2-0.
Stanton should have a pretty good chance to have success in this tournament. Wakefield has lost to many difficult opponents, and the Mustangs are another good team that should be able to handle the Trojans, should the two teams play.
Whoever Stanton plays will have a difficult time contending with the Mustangs. I'm sure Stanton will look to build off last week's success, and make up for the loss to Columbus Scotus.
The matches in this tournament are all that the Mustangs will play this week so it's important for Stanton to have a good showing. The Mustangs played respectable volleyball last week, and I look for them to step things up even more this week.
I think Stanton is a team that will only get better as the season progresses. These early season matches are important for building for the rest of the season. The Mustangs want to be playing their best volleyball come sub districts, and these early season matches will help Stanton build for a big postseason run.
Every match, ever set, and every point is critical, and the Mustangs' play has to reflect that. I think Stanton understands the importance of taking one match, one set, and one point at a time. The Mustangs are going to have pretty good success against most teams they play, and I look for Stanton to have their way in the Wakefield Tournament.
I wouldn't be surprised if the Mustangs won the Wakefield Tournament. Stanton isn't going to have a cakewalk by any means, but the Mustangs should have a pretty good chance to beat just about anyone they face.
It will be interesting to see if Stanton can build on the success they had last week, and improve from week one to week two.
