West Point-Beemer starts season 1-1

The West Point-Beemer Volleyball Team is off to a 1-1 start, winning 3-2 at Howells-Dodge Thursday night before losing 3-0 at Wisner-Pilger Tuesday night.

The Cadets took set one from the Jaguars, 25-14, before Howells-Dodge won set two 25-23. West Point-Beemer claimed set three 25-13 and won set five 15-9 after the Jaguars forced a fifth set by winning set four 25-18.

Nicole Mitzel had a match-high 15 kills while Makenna Weddle registered 12 kills and 15 digs. Brittney Hinkel and Sidney Swanson totaled 9 kills apiece while Lizbeth Inzunza notched 18 digs. Katie Pilakowski registered 16 digs and 43 set assists while Leigh Jahnke chipped in 13 digs.

Total team effort in this match. I thought a lot of different girls stepped up and led the Cadets to victory.

West Point-Beemer dropped set one to the Gators, 26-24, set two 25-21, and set three 25-13.

The Cadets did a great job of competing in the first two sets, in my opinion, but it appears the third set got away from West Point-Beemer.

The Cadets (1-1) take on Schuyler (1-1) and Twin River (2-4) at the Schuyler Triangular on Thursday.

The Warriors also lost 3-0 at Wisner-Pilger last Thursday night before sweeping D-2 foe Cornerstone Christian on the road this past Thursday night.

The Titans, on the other hand, beat Logan View 2-0, but lost 2-0 to Tekamah-Herman at the Tekamah-Herman Triangular Tuesday night.

I think West Point-Beemer will definitely beat Schuyler, and could beat Twin River, although I view that match as being a toss up.

The Cadets must have the same type of team play they got against Howells-Dodge.

Everyone played well together and was on the same page in that match. West Point-Beemer also competed well with Wisner-Pilger...the Gators are just an exceptional team.

Mitzel, Pilakowski, Weddle, Swanson, Inzunza, Hinkel, and Jahnke all have to do their thing for the Cadets again Thursday night.

The Cadets have to be fundamentally sound and make smart passes. West Point-Beemer also has to hit and block well, and play to their strengths.

Diving after loose balls, knowing when a ball is in and out, and having good court presence will all be important for West Point-Beemer as well, in my opinion.

The Cadets can definitely win both of these matches...they just have to put their minds to it and play good volleyball.

The Cadets certainly have the potential to be a good team this season, and beating Twin River and Schuyler would be a big, positive step in the right direction I feel.

I felt West Point-Beemer made great strides in beating Howells-Dodge, but sort of took a step back against Wisner-Pilger you could say.

It's all about becoming a consistently good Volleyball team if you are the Cadets. West Point-Beemer has the potential to be a really good team...they just have to keep growing and improving throughout the season.

Two wins would be really good for the Cadets heading into Tuesday's home match with Tekamah-Herman.

West Point-Beemer and Tekamah-Herman figure to have some good battles this year so the Cadets need to gain any advantage they can heading into that contest and any potential matches the two play this season.
