BRLD goes 2-3 at Wakefield Tournament; splits Oakland-Craig Triangular
The BRLD Volleyball team went 2-3 at the Wakefield Tournament last week, downing Homer and Wakefield 2-0 last Thursday, and then losing 2-1 to Ponca, and 2-0 to Hartington Cedar Catholic and Lutheran High Northeast on Saturday. The Wolverines then turned around and split the Oakland-Craig Triangular on Tuesday, downing the host Knights 2-0, and losing 2-0 to Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family.
BRLD downed Homer 25-14 in set one, and 25-20 in set two.
Vicki Gatzemeyer registered 8 kills while Kelcee Bacon notched 8 digs.
The Wolverines defeated Wakefield 25-21 in the first set, and 27-25 in the second set.
Gatzemeyer totaled 10 kills while Bacon had 14 digs. Tiahna Bonneau and Lauren Ahlers dished out 10 and 8 set assists, respectively.
The Indians won set one 25-14. BRLD took set two 25-16 before Ponca claimed set three 25-20.
Gatzemeyer led the way with 10 kills and 8 digs while Halle Wortman, Bacon, and Brandi Simonsen recorded 9, 8, and 7 digs, respectively. Bonneau notched 14 set assists while Ahlers managed 7.
Hartington Cedar Catholic earned a 25-10 set one win, and won set two 25-4.
Gatzemeyer paced the Wolverines with 7 digs.
The Eagles took set one 25-19, and set two 25-17.
Morgan Bonneau put down 7 blocks while Tiahna Bonneau totaled 7 set assists.
The Bulldogs won sets one and two 27-25.
Gatzemeyer recorded 9 kills and 8 digs while Bacon had 8 digs.
The Wolverines took set one from Oakland-Craig, 25-16, and earned a 25-23 win in set two.
Gatzemeyer paced BRLD with 9 kills while Bacon added 10 digs. Tiahna Bonneau put down 9 set assists.
Gatzemeyer, Bacon, and Tiahna Bonneau have proven to be the Wolverines' go to players and MVP's of the team so far this season I would say.
All three are big reasons for the success BRLD has had so far this year, in my opinion.
The Wolverines (6-7) take part in the Tekamah-Herman Tournament on Saturday.
BRLD will see the host Tigers (8-3) at some point as this tournament is a four-team Round Robin.
The Wolverines have to continue to step up their level of play against the tougher teams they play if they want to get over the hump and do something this season.
BRLD has already proven to be dominate against the teams they're supposed to beat, and that's a good thing, but the Wolverines need to perform like they did against Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family in all tough matches.
I think the potential is there for BRLD to take that next step and become a great, elite team, but the Wolverines have to start beating some of the tougher teams on their schedule to become better than just an average or decent team, which is what I would say BRLD is now.
Gatzemeyer needs to spearhead this effort as does Bacon and Tiahna Bonneau, and others have to follow suit.
The Wolverines have a lot of young talent, but at some point that young talent has to grow, mature, develop, and perform.
BRLD just needs players like Simonsen, Ahlers, Morgan Bonneau, Wortman, and Sophia Henneman to step and perform well on a consistent basis.
I know Simonsen and Henneman aren't young players being seniors, and so they really need to step up their games if at all possible, and put up bigger numbers if they can.
I guess what I'm trying to say is the Wolverines need more girls to contribute and put up bigger numbers if they want to take that next step and become a great team.
BRLD is definitely capable of going on a run and winning a bunch of matches, and the schedule over the next couple of weeks sets up for the Wolverines to do that.
Now is the time to turn the corner if you are BRLD.
I think this tournament could be season changing for the Wolverines. I feel BRLD has a chance to at least win a couple of matches, and get over that hump of beating good teams.
I think the Wolverines have a shot to win this tournament, but the host Tigers will be very tough, there's no doubt about it.
