Defending C-2 Champ Stanton off to 4-1 start

The Stanton Volleyball team has started the season 4-1, defeating Madison and Clarkson/Leigh 2-0 at the Stanton Triangular Thursday night before beating Pierce and Norfolk Catholic 2-0, but losing 2-1 to Columbus Scotus at the Columbus Scotus Tournament on Saturday.

The Mustangs downed the Patriots 25-16 in set one, and 25-8 in set two.

Jessie Brandl totaled 9 kills and 11 digs while Bree Burtwhistle notched 7 kills and 12 set assists. Jaiden Hartl recorded 8 digs while Liz Christensen registered 7. Makenna Espinoza dished out 13 set assists.

Stanton defeated the Dragons 25-8 in set one, and 25-5 in set two.

Hannah Heppner led the way with 8 kills. Burtwhistle chipped in 14 set assists.

The Mustangs dropped set one 25-21 and set three 25-17 to the Shamrocks, but took set two 25-23.

Burtwhistle led the way with 10 kills, 9 digs, and 13 set assists while Brandl and Reba Waskowiak registered 7 kills apiece. Hartl added 8 digs while Brandl recorded 7. Espinoza dished out 12 set assists.

Stanton downed the Bluejays 25-16 in the first set, and 25-17 in the second set.

Brandl amassed 11 kills and 13 digs while Burtwhistle and Espinoza notched 13 and 9 set assists, respectively.

The Mustangs took care of the Knights 25-14 in set one, and 25-17 in set two.

Brandl totaled 8 kills and 7 digs while Burtwhistle chipped in 7 kills and 14 set assists. Christensen and Hartl added 9 and 7 digs, respectively, while Espinoza had 7 set assists.

I thought Stanton played really good Volleyball last week with the exception of the Scotus match. I don't know what it is about the Shamrocks. It has to be a mental thing for the Mustangs.

Stanton (4-1) takes part in the Boone Central Invitational on Saturday.

I'm not sure who's all in the tournament except the host Cardinals and O'Neill, but regardless of who is all in it the Mustangs are going to need to bring their "A" game to win the tournament.

Stanton has to play the way they did against all teams but Columbus Scotus.

Burtwhistle, Brandl, Christensen, Hartl, Waskowiak, Heppner, and Espinoza all have to come together and have productive matches at the same time for the Mustangs.

All have made big contributions at times this season, but there hasn't been a match where all 7 have been on.

Burtwhistle, Brandl, and Espinoza have been Stanton's most consistent players, but if Heppner and Christensen can get going then this Mustang team will be even tougher, in my opinion.

Stanton has to continue to improve and get better. This team is on pace to have another great season, but losing to a 1-3 Columbus Scotus team had to be somewhat discouraging even though the Shamrocks are one of the most storied programs in the state of Nebraska.

The Mustangs have to shake off that loss though and move on. Stanton has played good Volleyball to this point in the season, and must continue their hot play.

The Mustangs have all week to prepare for Saturday so they should be fresh and ready to go.

I look for Stanton to come out ready to play Saturday morning, and take it to every one of their opponents.

I think the Mustangs stand a good chance to win this tournament, and should have no problem playing well.

Stanton has to take things one match at a time and not look ahead to their next potential match. I think the Mustangs will be able to do that though. Stanton is a veteran and mature team that knows how to win.

All in all it should be another good day for Volleyball for the Mustangs.

Stanton should have a lot of success and do a lot of winning this weekend.
