West Point-Beemer goes 2-1 at Wisner-Pilger Invite: splits home Triangular
The West Point-Beemer Volleyball Team went 2-1 at the Wisner-Pilger Invite on Saturday, losing 2-0 to O'Neill, but beating Neligh-Oakdale 2-1 and Norfolk Catholic 2-0. The Cadets lost 2-0 to Stanton at their home Triangular Tuesday night before topping Scribner-Snyder 2-1.
The Eagles won sets one and two 25-15.
The Cadets took sets one and two 25-20 from the Knights.
The Warriors won the first set 25-20 before West Point-Beemer took the second set 25-16, and the third set 25-10.
The Mustangs defeated the Cadets 25-9 in set one, and 25-14 in set two.
Nicole Mitzel had 3 kills to pace West Point-Beemer.
In the Scribner-Snyder/West Point-Beemer match, the Cadets took set one 25-11 and set three 25-15 after the Trojans claimed set two 25-23.
Mitzel led all players with 14 kills while Brooke Haase totaled 10.
Head Coach Conley Straight. "Kind of come out a little flat against Stanton. With that, kind of not the energy that we were expecting. Especially a team against Stanton, one of the top teams in the state. With that, kind of have to have a little more energy than we came out. But I thought we bounced back well against Scribner-Snyder, and with that, came out with a team that we were hoping to see in both matches."
West Point-Beemer (12-10) faces BRLD (13-13) in Stanton at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday in the first round of the East Husker Conference Tournament.
The Wolverines lost 3-0 at home to North Bend Central Tuesday night.
This is a toss up match, in my opinion, but one the Cadets can definitely win.
This is the first and only meeting between the two teams this season, and it should be a great one.
West Point-Beemer has to do their best to try and contain Vicki Gatzemeyer.
She is capable of going off on the Cadets, and West Point-Beemer has to be aware of her at all times.
Mitzel, Haase, Makenna Weddle, Lizbeth Inzunza, Brittney Hinkel, and others, need to have big matches for the Cadets.
West Point-Beemer isn't doing bad this year, but the Cadets have a lot of talent, and have the potential to beat the Wolverines and challenge the Mustangs in the second match of the night should both teams get that far I would say.
I think West Point-Beemer would probably like another shot at Stanton. I'm sure the Cadets feel they're a better team than what they showed against the Mustangs Tuesday night.
Stanton is the real deal and will be very tough to beat on their home court, but if you're West Point-Beemer, you just want the chance to play the Mustangs again.
Sure the Cadets can probably go 1-1 regardless of how they do their first match, but a win over BRLD and a loss to Stanton looks a lot better than a loss to BRLD and a win over Madison.
West Point-Beemer has to come out and have fun, and just play their game on Thursday.
The Cadets have to start over so to speak.
West Point-Beemer has a lot of winnable matches prior to Subdistricts, and need to start playing good, consistent Volleyball to earn a high seed in the postseason.
Now would be the time for the Cadets to make a run and get well above .500.
I think slowly but surely West Point-Beemer is on their way to becoming a team that finishes more than a game above .500, but this tournament and the Cadets' last three regular season matches will be critical to West Point-Beemer's chances of doing just that.
The Cadets are trying to build their program and have success for years to come, and having a good showing at and representing yourselves well at the Conference Tournament is important in making that happen.
