GACC 1-2 in last three matches
The Guardian Angels Central Catholic Volleyball Team is 1-2 in their last three matches, falling 3-1 at home to Crofton last Thursday night, and 3-0 at home to David City Aquinas Monday night, before beating Norfolk Catholic 3-1 at home Tuesday night.
The Warriors won set one 25-19 before the Bluejays took set two 27-25. Crofton won set three 25-23, and set four 25-11.
Bobbie Ortmeier totaled 11 kills while Ally Plagge added 10 kills and 24 digs. Hanna Knobbe registered 21 digs while Kali Stratman had 19 digs and 23 set assists. Riley Throener and Brooklyn Bailey posted 11 digs apiece.
The Bluejays dropped set one to the Monarchs 27-25, set two 25-22, and set three 25-23.
Throener led all players with 11 kills and posted 8 digs while Plagge added 8 kills and 9 digs. Knobbe tallied 18 digs while Stratman recorded 16 digs and 23 set assists.
Head Coach Paul Steuter says his team was hurt by service errors. "For the last few matches we've actually cut down on our service errors, and I was thinking we were over the hump. We had a real issue with them early in the year. And I thought we were finally turning the corner. We work on them constantly in practice. And I thought after the last few matches that we had them under control, and then it reared its ugly head again tonight, and they were really at critical times."
Steuter says he was pleased with the Bluejays ' effort. "The girls came out and they really focused on execution on our side of the net. We've been really pushing that concept all year. Not worrying about what the opponent is doing so much as executing on our side of the net. And I thought the girls are doing a much better job of that. We gave them a few unforced errors that kind of cost them throughout the match tonight, but overall I thought our effort was excellent.
GACC defeated the Knights 25-22 in set one, and 25-18 in set two before dropping set three 25-22. The Bluejays closed out Norfolk Catholic with a 25-18 win in set four.
Ortmeier totaled 10 kills while Plagge and Throener contributed 7 each. Plagge had 13 digs while Stratman compiled 11 digs and 22 set assists. Meghan Brunsing tallied 10 digs while Throener and Knobbe notched 9 apiece.
GACC's stat production has gotten much better. I feel the Bluejays have made a lot of strides over the last couple of weeks.
GACC (7-14) takes on Battle Creek (14-7) in the first round of the Mid-State Conference Tournament at Battle Creek Monday night.
The Braves swept the Bluejays 3-0 at home on October 3rd, and lost 3-2 at Wayne last Thursday night.
This figures to be a very tough and challenging match for GACC, but given the fact the Bluejays have competed better lately, and they've dominated this tournament for years, you can never count out GACC.
The Bluejays are improving, and the win over the Knights Tuesday night proved that.
It's never too late for GACC, and one can never write off the Bluejays until their season is officially over.
GACC has to turn things up a few notches and raise their level of play on Monday.
It's time for the Bluejays to rally around each other and play even better than they have been lately.
GACC definitely has the potential to make noise in this tournament if they play up to their potential.
A number of players have come alive for the Bluejays and I look for them to do that again Monday night.
GACC has a good amount of time to practice and prepare for Battle Creek, and I look for the Bluejays to be sharp, crisp, and on top of their game come Monday.
GACC has to hit their spots on the attack and find the open holes in the defense.
The Bluejays also need to have good court awareness, and must communicate well together.
GACC must have a positive, we can do this attitude, and never give up.
The Bluejays have to fight, scrap, and claw until the very end.
GACC has to turn in the best performance they possibly can, and expect to win.
Monday night's match can be heard on 107.9 the Bull, online at www.kticradio.com, and on the free KTIC Radio App.
