Clarkson/Leigh loses to Battle Creek to end year
The Clarkson/Leigh Patriots lost 3-0 to Battle Creek last Monday at the C2-5 Sub District at Norfolk Catholic, falling 25-17 in set one, 25-18 in set two, and 25-20 in set three.
Shelby Paprocki had 12 kills and 16 digs while Maddie Cerv totaled 20 digs. Kaitlyn Becher registered 7 digs and 8 set assists while Kaegan Held added 7 set assists.
I thought Clarkson/Leigh played a competitive match despite getting swept. The Patriots made a lot of improvements from last year to this year, going 11-19 this season compared to 6-26 a year ago.
Becher, Megan Svehla, Cerv, Alyssa Novotony, Jessi Sayers, Rachel Rupprecht, and Camille Koehn are lost to graduation.
These seven players did a lot for Clarkson/Leigh this season and throughout their careers, and will be missed for sure.
The Patriots have to be excited about their future though.
Clarkson/Leigh returns Held, Hannah Kasik, Holly Kuhr, Paprocki, and others.
This year's freshman class is very talented, and I look for many of them to step up as sophomores and contribute to next year's team in a big way.
Paprocki led the team in kills this season with 265. She also led the way with 29 ace serves. Kasik led the way in blocks with 71. Cerv had a team leading 439 digs. Held led the way with 300 set assists.
So as you can see, the future is bright for this program given the production that returns for them next season.
For as many seniors as the Patriots lost this year, I think next year's team has a chance to be even better than this year's team was.
I wouldn't be surprised if the 2016 Clarkson/Leigh Patriots post a winning record and win anywhere from 15-20 matches.
The Patriots nearly doubled their win total from a season ago, and I could easily see that happening again in 2016.
