Overview:

The West Point-Beemer Volleyball Team looks for success under first year Head Coach Taylor Shepard.

You may recognize Shepard's name and that is because she is also the school's Head Girls Basketball Coach.

The Cadets return a lot of players from last year's 10-20 team that lost a lot of close matches and was a better team than their record indicated, in my opinion.

Returning players include Brooklyn Weddle (5'5, SR DS), Emily Toelle (5'5, SR RS/OH), Jadyn Meiergerd (5'10, JR MH/OH), Sidney Swanson (5'7, SR OH), Katie Rainforth (5'6, JR OH), and Rachel Groth (5'11, SR MH).

Others who could contribute include Diana Cervantes (5'5, JR DS), Ashlynn Boell (5'9, SO OH), Jordyn Landholm (5'6, JR RS/DS), Lauryn Hagedorn (5'8, JR S/DS), and Katie Groth (5'10, SO MH).

West Point-Beemer also welcomes in GACC transfer Reece Snodgrass (5'7, SR S).

The Cadets figure to have a pretty strong core team and group of girls.

Coach Shepard also works with most of these girls in basketball so the transition will hopefully be seamless.

West Point-Beemer has had a lot of success in Girls Basketball so let's see if the Cadets can translate that into dominance on the Volleyball Court as well.

Of course everything depends on the pandemic and what happens with that.

Coach Shepard says the main focus of the offseason was on the players' well being. "Our primary concern this spring/summer was keeping our kids both physically and mentally healthy. We spent a lot of time checking in with them over quarantine, and were so excited when we were able to start working with them. The girls really used this summer to commit to bettering themselves both in the weightroom and on the volleyball court, and we can't wait to see that hard work pay off!"

I'm very excited to see how West Point-Beemer fares this Volleyball season.

Season Outlook:

I think West Point-Beemer has a chance to turn a lot of last year's close losses into wins this year.

The front end of the schedule looks very promising for the Cadets with certain teams and programs perhaps not being as strong as in years past, and given West Point-Beemer's potential for this season.

Shepard says the team has made and plans to make the most of the season. "We are definitely looking forward to taking advantage of the season that we are given, and our girls have high goals for the season. The energy in the gym has been high, and the girls are definitely focused and reenergized heading into this season."

I look for the Cadets to do well this year and for Coach Shepard to get the most out of these girls.

Shepard says her team is excited to get started. "At the start of every season, there is a great deal of anticipation for games to get started, but you can really tell that this team is focused and ready to start showing what they can do on the court."

West Point-Beemer has a lot of talent and potential heading into this season now they just need to translate that into wins on the court.

The Cadets have done just that in Girls Basketball in recent years, and I don't think there's any doubt that they can do it in Volleyball too.

This could certainly be West Point-Beemer's year to do something in both Volleyball and Girls Basketball as long as things aren't altered, adjusted, affected, interrupted, disrupted, or cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

That's the key though. If the pandemic continues to get worse and doesn't improve then it could be interesting to see what becomes of the season.

Let's simply hope things progress well and normal, and that the pandemic doesn't force or cause the shutdown of Fall High School Sports in Nebraska.

The Cadets open up the season on August 27th at the Battle Creek Triangular against the host Bravettes and Stanton.
