Wacker to lead Logan View/Scribner-Snyder

Team: Logan View/Scribner-Snyder

Mascot: Raiders

Colors: Blue and Gold

Class: C-1

Conference: Capitol

Head Coach: Natalie Wacker (1st season)

2019 record: 17-15 (lost to St. Paul at Sub-State)

Returning Starters: 2

Overview:

The Logan View/Scribner-Snyder Volleyball Program is under new leadership as Natalie Wacker takes over the program for Brad Schlegel.

The Raiders bring back 2 starters from last year's Sub-State Team, and they are Dream Daugherty (5'8, JR OH), who had 245 kills last year, and Kristal Svehla (5'11, SR M).

Others likely to contribute include Stormy Poast (5'2, SR L).

Coach Wacker says the offseason involved some adjusting and adapting to what was going on. "This off season I had to get more creative. Since we weren’t able to get into the weight room or gym till mid June we had Zoom meeting to go over drills & lifts  they could do at home by themselves. It definitely wasn’t the same, but the girls were understanding and motivated themselves to get better."

She adds she has a good group of girls to work with. "This is a young group of girls who are wanting to get better and work hard every time they step on the court. They are coachable and have a positive attitude and are bettering themselves to benefit the team."

Wacker says the team is anxious to get the season started. "So far this season, practices have been going well. The girls show up each day ready to work. We didn’t have a great opportunity to compete this summer, due to COVID, so once games start it will be a great opportunity for me to see how we look against our competition."

Of course this is all dependent upon the pandemic not shutting us down.

Wacker discusses the protocol for fans at their home games this year. "Every place we go is different. Each school has set their own rules and regulations. Logan View will be giving tickets to players to hand out to people if they want to come to games. Masks will be required for spectators in the bleachers."

It is what it is and is something that everyone will have to deal with and battle through this year.

Season Outlook:

Logan View/Scribner-Snyder looks to sustain the success that Coach Schlegel had while at the helm of the program.

Coach Wacker says the team has been bitten by the injury bug, but remains optimistic. "We are a very young group this season and battling some injuries, but the girls have stepped up and working hard. We don't know what to expect this season so we are taking it one day at a time and are thankful for everyday we can compete."

She adds their starting setter is out. "We lost our setter at the beginning of the season due to a shoulder injury. She was a key component to our offense this season. Our backup setter has big shoes to fill, but she is working hard to do so."

Wacker talks about how the team is adjusting to COVID. "The biggest change this year with COVID is wearing masks to practice and sometimes games (depending on the school’s guidelines). It was a big adjustment, but the girls know that if they want to keep playing it is just an obstacle that we have to overcome."

Coach Wacker adds everyone is very excited to have the opportunity to play this year. "I am so thrilled that we have the opportunity to play. I tell the girls everyday to be thankful for the time that we have to play the sport we love. We never know when our last game or practice could be so make the most out of everyday."

You just never know when this season could come to an end.

Of course everyone had to miss spring sports last year cause of this.

Wacker says this season carries extra weight. "There is definitely a lot of excitement from the players to be in the gym again. We know the girls missed being able to play volleyball and have been grateful for the opportunity to play this fall. As always, with the beginning of the season, the girls are anxious to get the season going, but this year it is even more since they missed their spring sports and a large chunk of their summer."

I fully expect the Raiders to make the most of their opportunities this year.

Coach Wacker says LVSS wants to be top notch. "My number one goal this season is to challenge the girls and compete at the highest level, state. This group is young, but hungry. They are very competitive and want to be the best of the best."

She adds the girls simply love the sport. "There’s a lot of craziness in the world these days and I have multiple girls tell me that volleyball is the one thing that is consistent in their lives that brings them joy."

I look for the Raiders to have a lot of fun this year.

LVSS opens up the season on August 27th at the Omaha Brownell Talbot Triangular against Omaha Brownell Talbot and Boys Town.
