Oakland-Craig looking for big things under Rennerfeldt

Team: Oakland-Craig

Mascot: Knights

Colors: Orange and White

Class: C-1

Conference: East Husker

Head Coach: Becky Rennerfeldt (1st season)

2019 record: 23-10 (lost to Mead in Sub-Districts)

Returning Starters: 4

Overview:

The Oakland-Craig Volleyball Team looks for another big season as Becky Rennerfeldt comes over from Tekamah-Herman to Coach the Knights.

Oakland-Craig went 23-10 last year, and narrowly missed out on a wildcard to Sub-State.

The Knights return four starters from last year, including Josie Richards (5'8, SR S ), who had 112 kills and 423 assists last season, Ashten Rennerfeldt (5'8, SR OH), Makenna Pearson (6'0, SR MB), who finished with 116 kills and 81 blocks last season, and star Bailey Helzer (6'0, SR OH), who had 391 kills and 449 digs last season. Other returning letterwinners include Laryn Johnson (5'8, SO L), and Maycie Johnson (5'8, SO MB).

Others likely to contribute include Shea Johnson (5'9, SO) and Marysa Mulder (5'11 SR).

Hopefully the pandemic doesn't cause any delays and we get through a full season of Volleyball.

Rennerfeldt says this offseason looked different than others have in the past. "Volleyball was able to start doing things on June 1st so we really have been in the gym 2 to 3 times a week since then. We were not able to do a summer league like we typically do and unfortunately the Top Ten camp in Kearney that we were invited to this year for the first time got canceled as well. We did go to one team camp at Wayne."

I really feel like Oakland-Craig has a chance to do well and make some noise this season. I look for Helzer to have a star studded year.

Season Outlook:

It certainly appears as if Oakland-Craig has great potential this year. Rennerfeldt comments. "Bailey Helzer will be a powerful force. Josie Richards running a 5-1 this year. Ashten Rennerfeldt switching to OH from libero. We have high expectations this season but will need some sophomores to step up and fill some positions."

Role players will certainly be just as important as the top players this year as it all takes a team effort in the end to be successful.

That's of course if we don't get shutdown cause of the pandemic.

Rennerfeldt says her team is taking the proper precautions, and is excited for the season to start. "We are all so excited to be able to get the opportunity to have a volleyball season this year. We are just taking it day by day and doing everything we can to keep healthy and stay safe so we can continue the season."

In the end that's all you can really do and hope for.

It certainly sounds like the Knights are doing everything on their end for this season to be completed.

I really hope there are no interruptions or delays and a cancellation to the season because this Oakland-Craig team has a chance to be very good and successful.

Let's hope the Knights are able to complete their season and reach their full potential.

Here is to crossing our fingers that the pandemic won't delay or alter the season in any manner.

Oakland-Craig hosts Howells-Dodge in the season opener on August 27th.
