Tekamah-Herman looking for returning and young talent to lead them to successful season

Team: Tekamah-Herman

Mascot: Tigers

Colors: Purple and Vegas Gold

Class: C-1

Head Coach: Becky Rennerfeldt (8th Season)

2017 record: 18-14

Returning Starters: 5

Overview:

The Tekamah-Herman Volleyball Team brings back 5 starters from last year's 18-14 team.

They include Anna Wakehouse (5'8, JR S/OH), Sydney Brummond (5'6, SR L), Maleah Sheets (5'10, SR MH), Anjolena Hampton (5'5, SR DS), and Jordan Wetzel (5'8, SR MH).

Head Coach Becky Rennerfeldt says there are only 13 girls out for the team this year, and 6 of them are freshmen.

Big losses from last year include setter Caty Gross and middle hitter Marin Jetensky. Rennerfeldt says there are some holes to fill this year.  "Lost our starting setter from the last 4 seasons so trying to find someone to take that spot. We also lost our Kill leaders from last year so need someone else to fill her shoes. Although it looks like we have five girls with experience, four of them only fill up two positions so will need younger girls to step up."

It will be interesting to see who steps up for the Tigers this year. Tekamah-Herman needs players to step up and take on new, big, and important roles quickly.

Rennerfeldt says the team played in the Bergan League in June, and went to the Wayne State and Omaha Team Camps this summer.

I look for the returning starters to leave their mark and make a big impact this season.

I think the experience the incoming freshmen gained in the offseason will really help and pay off this season as well.

I feel this year's freshman class has a chance to make an impact on and really lead this team to great things.

I think the combination of the veteran and young players will allow the Tigers to have a nice season, and find their way.

It could take some time for Tekamah-Herman to get things figured and ironed out with positions and everything, but once the Tigers get the ball rolling I look for them to go on to have a nice season.

Staying healthy and injury free is imperative though. The last thing Tekamah-Herman can afford is to be banged up.

Rennerfeldt feels the team feels great about last year, saying the team probably outplayed what people expected them to do. She adds defense will be the strength of the team this year.

Season Outlook:

Tekamah-Herman opens up the season with Wisner-Pilger and Lutheran High Northeast in the Northeast Nebraska Volleyball Classic at Wisner-Pilger on Thursday.

Two tough teams right there to start off the season. The Tigers have their work cut out for them to say the least you could say.

The Tigers have a mix of tough and winnable matches you could say.

Matches against Logan View/Scribner-Snyder, West Point-Beemer, Stanton, Oakland-Craig, Wisner-Pilger, Fremont Bergan, and Howells-Dodge appear to be the most challenging.

Rennerfeldt hopes the team can find their way this season. "I expect Stanton to be probably one of the top teams that we play this year, but hopefully there's enough teams on that schedule that we can kind of compete with that our girls can feel good about where we're at."

I feel matches against teams like Madison, Pender, Twin River, and BRLD are high probability wins for Tekamah-Herman.

The Tigers are in Sub-District C1-6 with North Bend Central, Logan View/Scribner-Snyder, West Point-Beemer, and Arlington.

Rennerfeldt feels the sub-district is wide open and so do I.

I think any of the teams in the sub-district are capable of coming out of it.

I think the keys to success for Tekamah-Herman this season are playing hard, continuing to improve, staying healthy, and stepping up.

The Tigers need some young girls to step up and fill voids left by last year's departing seniors.

Tekamah-Herman needs some of these freshmen to mature and grow up quickly, and play big parts in the success of this year's team.

The Tigers had a fine regular season last year, and I don't see any reason why Tekamah-Herman can't have another successful season.

The Tigers just have to keep their heads up and play smart, tenacious, and have fun at all times this season.

Executing in all phases of the game will be crucial as well, in my opinion.
