Emerson-Hubbard looking to grow and improve with mix of young and veteran players
Team: Emerson-Hubbard
Mascot: Pirates
Colors: Purple and Gold
Class: D-2
Head Coach: Traci Millard (1st season)
2017 record: 5-23
Returning Starters: N/A
Overview:
The Emerson-Hubbard Pirates are under new and old leadership as former Head Coach Traci Millard takes over the reigns of the program once again. Millard was the Head Coach for Emerson-Hubbard from 2003-2009.
The Pirates have 5 returners from last season in seniors Taylor Daum (5'9, MH) and Stephanie Ferrusca (5'1, SR S/DS), as well as juniors Madison Gunderson (5'2, S), Addison Mackling (5'4, OH/DS/S), and Isabella Parker-Diaz (5'7, S/RS), who are expected to be the main starters, according to Millard.
Senior Cashlyn Krahmer is expected to play a lot also. Millard says Freshman Brynn Shock will be a big contributor as well.
Millard says the Pirates are looking forward to the season. "We are all very excited for the 2018 volleyball season. We have five girls returning from last year and all of them have welcomed the new five with excitement. We are a small and somewhat inexperienced team when it comes to varsity competition, but we are eager to compete and grow as a team."
Millard says was weightroom and open gym participation was good over the summer. The team went to the Wayne State and Wayne High Team Camps. She says the camps helped prepare the team for what they are going to see this season.
Emerson-Hubbard might be low on numbers and somewhat young, but it appears there is some pretty good talent amongst the 10 the Pirates have out for the team this season.
I'm interested and curious to see what Emerson-Hubbard can do this year.
I think the Pirates have a chance and an opportunity to do better and win more matches than they did last year.
Nothing figures to come easy for Emerson-Hubbard this season, especially against teams with height, but there's no doubt in my mind the Pirates can get the job done and go on to do good things.
It's enlightening to see that Emerson-Hubbard has enough girls out for the team this year as it was looking rather bleak around the time the Pirates were attempting to co-op with Pender.
I think Emerson-Hubbard will work hard and get the most out of themselves this season regardless of what their win/loss record turns out to be.
Season Outlook:
The Emerson-Hubbard Volleyball looks to improve and make progress as the season goes along all while having fun.
The Pirates get their season started on Tuesday night at Omaha Nation.
Millard feels Omaha Nation will be a pretty even matchup, and is glad the Pirates are playing this match first this year instead of the usual triangular with Ponca and Homer, which will be held on Thursday.
I feel there are a lot of winnable matches on the schedule for Emerson-Hubbard this season.
I think the Pirates can beat the likes of Omaha Nation, Homer, Pender, Osmond, Laurel-Concord-Coleridge, Winnebago, Neligh-Oakdale, and Walthill.
There are some challenging matches on the schedule too, but I feel there's a lot of room and opportunity for wins, growth, and improvement from Emerson-Hubbard this season.
The Pirates are in Sub-District D2-4 with Wynot, Winside, Santee, and Bloomfield.
I would say the Blue Devils are the favorite to come out of that sub-district with Winside a threat as well.
Emerson-Hubbard can definitely make noise in that sub-district when the time comes I feel.
The Pirates just have to work hard all season long and learn from their mistakes, and correct errors and such.
Emerson-Hubbard isn't really that far removed from a state run so perhaps the Pirates can taste a little bit of that magic this year as well.
Millard says team goals include working together. "Right now our team goals are to make sure that we continue to play as a team. Especially having 5 returning and 5 new we want to make sure that we continue to welcome the 5 new with open arms, and make sure that they feel like a part of the team."
I think building lifelong lasting relationships through Volleyball is important for this Emerson-Hubbard squad.
Millard says the team is practicing mainly on the rotation, and making sure they're getting that down, and adds the team's overall goal is to walk away with as many wins as possible.
