Overview:
It's a new team and overhaul for the BRLD Wolverines this season as BRLD lost quite a few players from last season.
BRLD returns 4 letterwinners, and they are Brandi Simonsen (5'2, SR L), Kelsey Larsen (5'7, JR MH), Tori Ostrand (5'7, JR MH), and Halle Wortman (5'8, JR OH).
Head Coach Rebecca James says Sophomores Caragan Tietz (5'8, RS/S), Kinlee Bacon (5'5 S/RS), Alexzi Nottleman (5'6, RS/OH) , and Aubrey Berg (5'4, DS/OH) will play as well.
The team is also looking at playing Tyra Bonneau (5'8, JR OH).
James says so far practices and conditioning have went well, and she's looking to a fun season.
James adds the team has a lot of inexperience, but a lot of hope and talent.
She says these girls have good chemistry and have done a lot of things for team bonding.
James told me the team is young, but hopes to be competitive in conference and in their schedule.
There are 31 girls out for the team this year.
Big losses from last year's team include Vicki Gatzemeyer, Lauren Ahlers, Tiahna Bonneau, Morgan Bonneau, and Kelcee Bacon.
James says the team is working well together. "They are great at encouraging each other and working hard and I guess communicating what we need to do to be successful."
James says it's a completely different team this year.
The Wolverines played in the Northeast Community College League in Norfolk.
It sounds like there's a lot of hope and promise for the future of BRLD Volleyball, but the Wolverines are young this year and will be challenged without a doubt.
I feel this season will be a good year of growth and development for these young Wolverine players, and their might be some growing pains that come with that.
The thing that BRLD has to focus on is continuing to improve and grow as a team each day.
The Wolverines have to have good camaraderie all season long and be willing to learn all while keeping a positive attitude at all times.
Season Outlook:
It figures to be a year of growth and learning for BRLD.
I think it can be a successful season in many ways for the Wolverines.
BRLD has a tough opener though as they take on Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family at home Tuesday night.
James feels BRLD can be competitive against the Bulldogs if they can capitalize when Taya Beller isn't in the front row.
James says the team doesn't have that one star player, but has a lot of good, capable players.
I feel BRLD has a mixture of tough and not as tough matches on their schedule which should make for some nice wins and challenges.
Some of the tougher games on the schedule in my mind are against Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family, Clarkson/Leigh, Fremont Bergan, Howells-Dodge, Wisner-Pilger, Logan View/Scribner-Snyder, North Bend Central, Tekamah-Herman, and Oakland-Craig, and that's not counting tournaments.
She adds the conference schedule will help prepare for the Wolverines for the postseason. "The East Husker Conference really does give us a really good competitive schedule so when it comes around sub-district and district times we have played competitive teams already."
BRLD is in Sub-District C2-5 with GACC, Wisner-Pilger, Oakland-Craig, and Omaha Nation.
When assessing the sub-district, James says GACC is going to be competitive.
She says the team is working at being more aggressive and scrappy, and always working hard to get better.
She adds the ultimate goal is to make state.
Making State might be a very tall task for the Wolverines, but this is a team and a program that was one match away from making state last season.
I'm sure a lot of these players remember that, and I think it definitely gives BRLD something to work for for sure.
The Wolverines have to be ready to get after it this season, and outwork and outhustle opponents that might have more experience than them.
BRLD has to treat every situation as a learning opportunity, and a chance to get better and improve their game and craft.
