GACC looking to get back to form as Hagemann retakes over program
Team: Guardian Angels Central Catholic
Mascot: Bluejays
Colors: Blue and White
Class: C-2
Head Coach: Kate Hagemann
2017 record: 10-17
Returning Starters: N/A
Overview:
A familiar face is returning to the sidelines for the GACC Bluejays this season as Kate Hagemann retakes over the program for Paul Steuter, who spent one season as Head Coach of the GACC Volleyball Team.
The Bluejays have 2 seniors and a total of 24 girls out for the team this year.
The seniors are Angela Jansen and Ally Plagge.
Hagemann says Hanna Knobbe is expected to start at Libero for GACC this year.
Big losses from last year include Riley Throener, Bobbie Ortmeier, and Kali Stratman.
She adds the Bluejays went to the Wayne State and Wayne High Team camps this summer, and also took part in the Norfolk League.
Hagemann says the Bluejays were a better team last year than their record showed. "Even though last year's team, maybe their record doesn't look so good, there's a lot of games where they weren't that far off from winning. They also got hit by the injury bug, which is just tough to sustain when you're putting a different lineup on the court because of injuries."
Hagemann says the team has to be consistent and work hard to get back to the level the program was at just a few years ago.
She feels camaradarie and team togetherness is going to be really good this year.
I feel GACC is going to get back to their dominate ways this season.
The Bluejays went through a transition year last year, and were dealt some tough breaks.
I look for GACC to have a good season this year, and be a state contender once again.
This is a very proud and tradition rich program, and I look for the Bluejays to get back to their winning ways this year.
GACC opens up the season on Thursday against BRLD and Wayne in the Northeast Nebraska Volleyball Classic in Pender.
Two tough matches to start off with as both teams should be good tests for the Bluejays.
Season Outlook:
The GACC Bluejays are expecting to be successful this year I don't think there's any doubt about that.
The journey back to dominance starts with matches against BRLD and Wayne to open up the season. Hagemann says the Blue Devils will be tough. "They're a solid team, they always are. Always have good athletes. One thing I was impressed with them this summer is just how few mistakes that they made. So it will be a good challenge to see if we've improved since the last time we've played them, and both teams will present us with some big challenges to start the year."
I think if GACC is going to lose one of the matches it will be against Wayne. I could see the Bluejays starting the season 2-0, but it could very well be 1-1.
GACC has a pretty daunting and difficult schedule this year so it will be interesting to see how quickly the Bluejays can get back to form.
There will be lots of opportunities for growth, development, and improvement this year that's for sure.
GACC is in Sub-District C2-5 with BRLD, Wisner-Pilger, Oakland-Craig, and Omaha Nation.
Hagemann says the sub-district will be anyone's ball game. "I think our sub-district's wide open. I think we feel like we have a chance. I know Oakland and Wisner feel like they have great chances too."
I feel like the Gators and Knights will be the Bluejays' biggest threats.
I think any of those 3 teams are more than capable of winning the sub-district.
Hagemann says she's in favor of sub-state, saying it gets the best teams down to state and eliminates the wildcard.
Regardless of how GACC does in sub-districts I look for the Bluejays to make a sub-state match.
Programs like GACC and teams like the Bluejays almost always find a way to make state and be successful.
I look for GACC to find their way this year, and get back on track.
I think it will be a good, solid, successful season for the Bluejays that could culminate with a state berth.
