Winnebago looking to build upon last year
Team: Winnebago
Mascot: Indians
Colors: Blue and White
Class: C-1
Head Coach: Jade Farmer (2nd season)
2018 record: 9-20
Returning Starters: N/A
Overview:
The Winnebago Volleyball Team looks to build upon last year's 9-20 season.
The Indians have 13 girls on this year's varsity roster.
Key returners for 2nd year Head Coach Jade Farmer are Natasha Deal (5'8, JR MB/MH), Tia YellowThunder (5'6, SR S), Savannah Fiero (5'6, SR S/DS), Kiana Lewis (5'9, SR OH), Jaidan Payer (5'8, SR RS), and Keisha Snyder (5'10, JR MH).
These six girls figure to have a major impact on the team this year.
The Indians parted ways with Alex Neff, Jean Parker-Morris, Kiylista Harden, Kae Earth, and Jada Decora last season.
I feel Winnebago has a really strong core group of girls back and should be even more improved this year.
The Indians have a nice mix of older and younger players, and so it will be interesting to see how everyone meshes throughout the season.
I think things will be a lot easier this year for Winnebago from a system and understanding standpoint with it being Coach Farmer's 2nd year.
I feel the Indians are probably more familiar with what she wants and expects.
I thought Winnebago had a fairly decent season last year all things considering.
I do think the Indians have a lot of room for growth and improvement though, and if Winnebago can crack double digit wins this year that would be a huge deal I feel.
It can definitely happen too, but the Indians have to work their tails off these next 2+ months and make it happen.
Winnebago has to come out and play their style of Volleyball, and try and force other teams to adapt to what they are trying to do.
The Indians have to be scrappy, and must limit mistakes and not beat themselves.
Winnebago has to find ways to manufacture easy points and win the hustle plays and points as much as possible.
The Indians have to kick it into high gear with their first match of the season approaching.
Season Outlook:
Winnebago hosts Emerson-Hubbard in the season opener on Tuesday.
The Indians beat the Pirates twice last year, and I feel they have what it takes to do it again this year.
I feel there are plenty of opportunities for wins on the schedule for Winnebago this season.
If the Indians can limit their number of losses via sweep I think that would really help grow their confidence.
Reason being last year Winnebago was swept by a lot of teams that finished below .500.
Despite that though I thought the Indians took some positive steps in the right direction from 2017 to 2018.
I feel that Winnebago is in a good place and good hands with Coach Farmer.
I think the Indians can turn around their program, and now is as good a time as any to do so.
Winnebago has to maximize and realize their potential, and be confident in themselves and one another.
The Indians have to encouraging to one another in practice and in matches, and everyone needs to get along.
Winnebago has to take the fight to their opponent every single time they set foot on the floor.
The Indians have a good number of home matches this year so they need to defend their home floor this season.
Four of Winnebago's wins came at home last year as they were 4-5 in matches on their home court a year ago so that has to be encouraging.
Honestly I think the Indians can have success in just about every match they play in at home this season.
If Winnebago can defend their home court and at least take some sets in some of those matches I think it would serve as a confidence and momentum booster for the Indians.
There are 5 seniors, 4 juniors, 2 sophomores, and 2 freshmen on this team so having 9 upperclassmen on the team should really help Winnebago I would think as the time is definitely now for the Blue and White.

Emerson-Hubbard excited for new season
Team: Emerson-Hubbard
Mascot: Pirates
Colors: Purple and Gold
Class: D-2
Head Coach: Traci Millard (2nd season)
2018 record: 3-26
Returning Starters: 4
Overview:
The Emerson-Hubbard Volleyball Team looks for improved play this season as the Pirates return 4 starters from last year's 3-26 team.
Emerson-Hubbard brings back Senior Madison Gunderson, Senior Addison Mackling, Senior Reagan Reifenrath, and Sophomore Brynn Shock.
Head Coach Traci Millard says her team is really looking forward to the season. "We are all very excited for the 2019 volleyball season to begin. We have a total of eleven girls out; seven girls returning from last year and four new players. The returning players have shown a lot of growth since last season and we are happy to say that senior, Isabella Parker-Diaz, is returning this season after a knee injury took her out of play mid-season last year. We may be a small and young team, but we are large when it comes to heart and dedication."
The Pirates lost Cashlyn Kramer, Stephanie Ferrusca, and Taylor Daum to graduation last year.
Of course there has been talks of a possible co-op with Wakefield and Allen next year so we'll see if that happens.
In the meantime, all the Pirates can do is focus on this year and play well and win.
I think Emerson-Hubbard has a chance to win some matches this season.
I feel the Pirates have good numbers and are more experienced this year than last year.
Emerson-Hubbard has to go out there every night and play with tons of pride and passion.
The Pirates can't take any plays off, and must come ready to work each and every night.
Emerson-Hubbard has to play tenacious and with attitude and grit.
The Pirates can't back down from anyone and think anyone is better than them.
Having a winning mentality and expecting to win is going to be big for Emerson-Hubbard I feel.
Winning some matches will help the team's confidence and allow their attitudes to be positive no doubt.
The girls have to work hard all season long and leave it all out on the floor and see where that takes them.
The Pirates have to play with Hearts of Champions, and show everyone what they're made of and what they have.
Emerson-Hubbard can't take anyone lightly and can't be afraid or scared of anyone either.
Season Outlook:
Emerson-Hubbard begins the season on Thursday at home against Omaha Nation.
The Pirates beat the Chiefs 3-1 last season, and there's no reason to think that Emerson-Hubbard can't beat Omaha Nation again this year.
The thing the Pirates have to do better this year though is build off that first win.
Emerson-Hubbard went almost 2 months in between wins last year, and that simply cannot happen this year.
The schedule is really similar and a little different than last year.
The Pirates play Winnebago on Tuesday, and I think it would be a big deal if Emerson-Hubbard could pick up wins over both the Chiefs and Indians.
Perhaps that would spark some positive momentum and get things headed in the right direction.
No matter what happens this season though at no point can the Pirates give up.
Never throw in the towel...keep fighting no matter how much adversity comes your way.
Emerson-Hubbard has to make this season one to remember if indeed and in fact this is their final season as the Emerson-Hubbard Pirates.
Emerson-Hubbard can't take anything for granted this year that is for sure.
The Pirates have to give an all out great and fantastic effort each and every time out, and leave everything they have out on the floor.
Emerson-Hubbard needs great senior leadership and different girls to step up on a nightly basis.
The Pirates must have contributions from everyone whether that is statistically or emotionally.
The players that see the floor have to produce, and the teammates sitting the bench need to cheer them on.
Emerson-Hubbard has to make the season as memorable as they can, and go out fighting no matter what happens or what the future holds.
All the Pirates can do is control the present, and I feel that's what they need to do and focus on the most this season in order to have success.

Tekamah-Herman looking to be improved from last year despite low numbers
Team: Tekamah-Herman
Mascot: Tigers
Colors: Purple and Vegas Gold
Class: C-1
Head Coach: Becky Rennerfeldt
2018 record: 4-27
Returning Starters: N/A
Overview:
The Tekamah-Herman Volleyball Team looks to build upon the end of last season despite being low on numbers this year as the Tigers only have 9 girls out for the team. Head Coach Becky Rennerfeldt says that has made for creative practices.
"So we don't necessarily have a full 12 to scrimmage so my assistant coaches and I are getting our Volleyball skills all better. We're playing with the girls everyday so we can run some 6 on 6 drills."
Rennerfeldt says the gym atmosphere has been better this year than it was the past couple of years.
The Tigers graduated seniors Maleah Sheets, Anjoleena Hampton, Jordan Wetzel, and Sydnee Brummond last year.
I feel Tekamah-Herman is fully capable of playing really good, competitive Volleyball this year, but they have to stay healthy.
You have to wonder if having low numbers will catch up to them at some point in the year.
It may or it may not, but either way I think the Tigers will be just fine.
I look for the team to work together as one this year like they already have been, and have good team unity and bonding.
This team is still young, according to Coach Rennerfeldt, and so there's certainly lots of room for growth and improvement throughout the season.
I think if Tekamah-Herman can improve from week-to-week and play at a high level each night out they will have a chance to win a lot of the matches they play.
Coach Rennerfeldt said matches last year were all close despite the losses so let's see if this team can turn those close losses into wins this year.
I really felt like the Tigers made strides at the end of last season, and feel that can carry over into this year.
Tekamah-Herman has to keep practicing hard and playing at a high level and must always have high energy.
Being in great physical shape and having good stamina and endurance is really important for the Tigers this year I feel, even more so than in other years.
Tekamah-Herman has been dealt some adversity from a numbers standpoint, but the Tigers just have to adapt to and deal with it the best they can, which it appears they already have.
Season Outlook:
Tekamah-Herman opens up the season on Thursday at home against BRLD. Rennerfeldt says it's hard to know what to expect from the Wolverines.
"Honestly I feel like they're a mystery to me this year because they have a new coach. And I just think that that makes a big difference on a team's demeanor. BRLD for us has always been known as a scrappy, scrappy defensive team. But I don't know if that stays the same with a new coach or what is really they're going to be like."
The Tigers fell twice to BRLD last year.
Tekamah-Herman went 4-27 last year, but was 3-3 in its last 6 matches.
Rennerfeldt adds the team was super young last year, and is young again this year.
BRLD's new co-coaches are Allie Tietz and Paige Raasch, and it will be interesting to see what happens in this match.
I think the Tigers have a great chance to win it being at home and everything.
But there is a lot of uncertainty and unknowns heading into this match for sure.
I feel like the schedule is once again challenging for Tekamah-Herman, but feel the Tigers have what it takes to win this year.
Tekamah-Herman has to bring it night in and night out, and must have a positive attitude at all times.
The Tigers can't take any opponent lightly or for granted that is for sure.
Tekamah-Herman has to give it everything they've got in each and every match.
Everyone needs to be ready to play and must know what is going on at all times.
Positive encouragement needs to come from the bench and from fellow teammates on the floor during matches.
The Tigers have to do everything they can to have a good season, and must make the most of every opportunity given to them.
Tekamah-Herman has to scrap, fight, and claw for every point, every set win, and every victory they get this season.
The Tigers have to take care of business against the teams they're supposed to beat, and challenge and knock off some tougher teams as well.
2019 Tekamah-Herman Tigers Volleyball Schedule:

Wisner-Pilger thinking big things this season
Team: Wisner-Pilger
Mascot: Gators
Colors: Green and White
Class: C-2
Head Coach: Jean Groth (41st season) (804-252 record)
2018 record: 23-11 (lost to Thayer Central at Sub-State)
Returning Starters: N/A
Overview:
The Wisner-Pilger Volleyball Team is looking for big things this year after coming up just one game short of making the State Tournament last year.
Head Coach Jean Groth says there are 6 girls on the team this year who have played all four years for the Gators. "Aspin Waterman. She is an outside attacker and a primary passer. She scored 214 points last season. 181 kills, 20 service aces, and 7 blocks. Rachel Otten. Rachel scored 281 points last season on 151 kills, 88 blocks and 42 ace serves. Ashley Brahmer scored 80 points last season on 48 kills, 13 blocks, and 9 service aces. Erin McGuire. Erin was one of the team's back up setters last season and will take on the setting duties along with Adi Meyer. Lexi Parker. Lexi is able to help the team as an outside attacker, a defensive specialist, and also as a serving specialist. Karrin Jindra. The ream is happy to welcome Karrin back after her knee in fury and rehab. She started for the team as a sophomore LIBERO in 2017.
Others expected to see varsity playing time are Sophomore middles Lily Otten and Lindsey Kneifl. They both are dominant athletes and very good middles.
Sophomore setter/attacker Adi Meyer returns as the Gators' freshman starter last year at that same position. Adi scored 95 points last season as a freshman. She scored on 51 ace serves, 31 kills, and 13 blocks.
Junior Reagan Scholting, returns as last year’s LIBERO. She led the team last season 300 digs. Junior, Tymarie Ott returns as a right side attacker.
Sophomore Joslyn Jacobs plays outside attacker for the team and appeared in 18 games last season. Sophomore, Shelby Braun is a defensive specialist for the team.
Wisner-Pilger lost three players from last year in Cassidy Gooch. She was a right-side attacker. She had 16 kills on the season and 7 blocks, Emily Hatterman. She was a setter. She had 644 set assists and 22 ace serves, Jordan Wegner. She was an outside attacker. The team had 884 kills last season and she had 382 kills. She also had 32 of their 160 blocks and 49 service aces out of 210.
Groth says the offseason went very well. "The team was very disciplined over the summer. They took advantage of many opportunities to improve individual skills as well as to gel as a team. Open gyms, individual camp, and team camps allowed them to take their games to the next level."
She adds this year's senior class is ready. "Returning seniors are ready for the challenge. Middles – Ashley Brahmer and Rachel Otten. Outsides – Aspin Waterman and Karrin Jindra. The right side of the net will be manned by Adi Meyer (sophomore) and Erin McGuire (senior) Defensively, we will lean on Reagan Scholting (Junior and Lexi Parker (senior)."
I feel the Gators have a chance to be very good this year and make it down to the State Tournament.
Season Outlook:
Wisner-Pilger opens up the season on Thursday at home against Schuyler in action that can be heard on 107.9 the Bull. Groth breaks down the matchup. "The match with Schuyler (a class B school) will be the “first night out” for the entire squad. There are always organizational jitters early I the season. I feel the team that focuses on earning points, in lieu of giving up points will have the advantage"
A win would be really good for the Gators' power points without a doubt.
Teams like Stanton, North Bend Central, and Stanton, and even Howells-Dodge have really dominated the conference in recent years. Groth weighs in on the conference this year. "I feel like Stanton and Clarkson Leigh have dominated the “talent pool” of the conference as of late. A majority of those athletes graduated last year. However, I respect their programs and expect no let down from them. Athletic prowess this season would probably go to NBC."
I'm sure Wisner-Pilger would love the opportunity to go to Sub-State again and make the State Tournament. Groth says there's a lot of tough competition out there and it often comes down to matchups. "Many times it is the pairings of the sub-district that set up one’s fate. There are quite a few powerful teams in northeast Nebraska in Class C-2. We will see…."
I think with a favorable matchup the Gators can get to State this year.
Losing Jordan Wegner and Emily Hatterman hurts big time, but I feel there are a lot of talented seniors on this team poised and ready to take the team to Lincoln.
It would be a big deal for Wisner-Pilger to get there in Coach Groth's 41st year.
State is a special thing and something that is earned, and with the new Sub-State format every match is super critical.
The Gators are going to see some tough competition this year, their schedule isn't easy, but I think if Wisner-Pilger wins and takes care of business against these teams they will be right where they want to be at the end of the season.
The Gators have to play every set and every point of every match as if there's no tomorrow and as if it's the last match they'll ever play cause that will come at some point at season's end.
Making it down to Lincoln would be a fitting way for this team to end their season, and they can definitely make it happen.
It's the last chance for these seniors to do so they have to go out there and make the most of their opportunity and seize the moment.

Pender looking for success under new Head Coach
Team: Pender
Mascot: Pendragons
Colors: Red and White
Class: D-1
Head Coach: Amy Ostrand (1st season)
2018 record: 7-23
Returning Starters: 2
Overview:
The Pender Volleyball Team returns two starters from last year's 7-23 team. 1st year Head Coach Amy Ostrand says returners include Ashley Ostrand, Zoey Lehmkuhl, Trista Hansen, and Caitlyn Heise (is out for season with injury.
I think losing Heise for the year is a major blow as she was a very talented freshman for the Pendragons last season.
Others who could contribute include Mercede Roberts, Olyvia Nelsen, Joslynn Jewell, Rylie Bonneau, and Kirsten Frey, according to Coach Ostrand.
Ostrand is assisted by former Husker Allie Havers, and others. "I have an awesome coaching staff - Paula Bonneau is my assistant and Melyssa Schroeder and Allie Havers are my volunteers! The girls have put in a lot of time this summer working on the fundamentals, and we brought in USD and WSC for skills camp in June and July."
These coaches will lead a lot of young and talented players. Ostrand says this year's team has a lot of youth. "We are a very young team - 3 juniors (which two of them were starters last year), 3 sophomores (which one is out with injury for season), 13 freshman, and 1 senior who is a foreign exchange student."
I feel this season could be a bit of a rebuilding year for Pender, but feel things will only get brighter in the future.
I look for Ashley Ostrand, Zoey Lehmkuhl, and Trista Hansen to be the leaders of this team.
If Heise was there that would make this team that much better I feel.
I think the Pendragons will really miss her this year.
Pender also lost quite a few seniors last year as Kaylin Sandall, Brittni Beckman, Rylee Lehmkuhl, Carley Hofmeister, Sadie Lamplot, and Sarah Krueger all graduated.
The Pendragons said goodbye to quite a few talented seniors a season ago, and replacing them isn't and won't be easy.
I feel the pieces are in place for Pender to be successful in the long run and long term, but as far as immediate success I just feel it could take some time for this program to get to where it wants to be.
I have no doubts the Pendragons will get there and be a force to be reckoned with in the future so this is an important laying a foundation year for Pender so to speak.
This is a big and crucial year for future success for the Pendragons.
Season Outlook:
Pender is looking for good things this year after finishing with single digit wins in each of the last two seasons. Ostrand says there's a lot of positives going for the team right now. "We are working on building confidence, skills, communication and the drive to win. I am very excited to see where this team will lead us because I see great things happening every day!"
I feel teams like Emerson-Hubbard, Cedar Bluffs, Winside, Homer, and maybe even Neligh-Oakdale are Pender's best chances at wins.
Going up against teams like Stanton, Wisner-Pilger, Howells-Dodge, Clarkson/Leigh, Logan View/Scribner-Snyder, Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family, Tekamah-Herman, and Oakland-Craig figure to be challenging as those are bigger schools with the exception of HLHF.
I feel this team has the potential to get to double digit wins this year, and that would be huge for sure.
I felt this program made strides from 2017 to 2018 and feel more strides can be made this season.
I don't know about having a winning record or winning the conference, but perhaps the Pendragons can go out there and surprise some people and turn some heads.
Pender opens up the season with the Northeast Nebraska Classic on September 5th.
I'm not sure who the Pendragons play or open up with, but it will be in Pender.
I think not having played a match prior to that classic could actually hurt the Pendragons some.
I think having already played a match would of helped Pender heading into that tournament having had a chance to watch film and play a match prior to the tournament.
With that said, I think the extra practice time is good for this young team.
I feel the Pendragons will play a lot better in this tournament than they would have in another match to start the year given the extra practice time.
Starting off with one of the teams I mentioned above as teams I feel Pender can beat would of been good for confidence perhaps, but it is what it is.
The Pendragons have to make the most of their extra practice time, and come ready to play come next Thursday.
A lot of progress and strides can be made for Pender this year I don't think there's any doubt about that.
2019 Pender Pendragons Volleyball Schedule:

BRLD looking for big things under new coaches
Team: Bancroft-Rosalie-Lyons-Decatur
Mascot: Wolverines
Colors: Blue and Gold
Class: C-2
Head Coaches: Allie Tietz and Paige Raasch (1st season)
2018 record: 12-18 (lost to Wisner-Pilger in Sub-Districts)
Returning Starters: N/A
Overview:
BRLD has new Volleyball Coaches in Co-Head Coaches Allie Tietz and Paige Raasch. Tietz is a Bancroft Native and first time coach.
"I am from Bancroft. I played here actually 5 years ago so I'm right out of college. I teach preschool."
Tietz and Raasch take over for Rebecca James.
The Wolverines said goodbye to seniors Madison Polenske, Brandi Simonsen, Kariden Briggs, and Zoe Sjuts last year.
I feel that Tietz and Raasch have a lot coming back and a lot to work with, but the transition could come with struggles.
It could take some time for the girls to gel and mesh given the fact there's new coaches and everything.
With that said, BRLD has had all summer and offseason to work together so I fully expect the Wolverines to put a quality product on the floor this season.
Some other players that people should see on the floor this season include Audra Nolting, Brooklyn Nolting, Halle Wortman, Aubrey Berg, Kinlee Bacon, Kelsey Larsen, Tyra Bonneau, Caragan Tietz, Alexzi Nottlleman, and Tori Ostrand.
There's a lot of talent on this team, and I fully expect BRLD to go out there and compete well on a nightly basis.
The Wolverines need to hit, serve, pass, serve receive, and block well to be successful this year.
I feel Megan Beutler has a chance to have a phenomenal freshman campaign, and feel this team has a chance to do a lot of special things with a lot of juniors and seniors on the roster.
The next two years of BRLD Volleyball have a chance to be successful, in my opinion.
I think a lot of it is playing well and up to their potential.
It all comes down to how badly they want it and how hard they're willing to work.
The Wolverines have to step things up this year to get to where they want, there's no doubt about that.
BRLD has to get the most of themselves from an athletic standpoint, and reach, realize and maximize their full potential.
Season Outlook:
BRLD opens up the season at Tekamah-Herman on Thursday. Tietz says the Tigers are low on numbers, but still figure to be tough.
"We're excited. A lot our practices revolve around defense. We hope to be good defenders against them, and give them everything we got. I don't know I know they only have 9 girls coming so I know that's tough for them, but I know they'll be competitive still."
Tietz says consistency is a goal for the team.
She adds the team is excited about 6'1 freshman Megan Beutler.
I think Beutler can be a real force at the net for the Wolverines this season.
I feel she is that one tall and big hitter/defender that BRLD has missed in the past.
The Wolverines always seem to be fast, scrappy, and athletic, but I can't really recall many girls they've had over 6'0 in recent years.
The only one that really comes close is Tess Nottleman.
BRLD has to give it their all each and every time they take to the floor.
The Wolverines have to stay positive at all times, and rally around one another when things are tough and not easy.
BRLD has to keep fighting and playing hard no matter what, and can't do into tough matches thinking or hoping they can win.
The Wolverines have to go into the season expecting to win each and every time they take to the floor.
It's a mentality thing, and a winning mentality is what BRLD must have.
Starting the season off the right way on Thursday at Tekamah-Herman is very important, in my opinion.
Reason being winning that first match can kind of set the tone for the season and get things headed in the right direction.
The Wolverines play some juggernauts early on so don't be surprised if BRLD starts slow, but picks things up and hits their stride at the end of September.
I feel the Wolverines will be a much better team in October than they are right now.

North Bend Central looking to return to dominant and winning ways
Team: North Bend Central
Mascot: Tigers
Colors: Orange and Black
Class: C-1
Head Coach: Amy Sterup (14th season)
2018 record: 14-15
Returning Starters: 8
Overview:
North Bend Central went through a bit of a rebuilding year last year one could say, but returns eight starters from last year's 14-15 team.
Back for 14th year Head Coach Amy Sterup are seniors Lauren Emanuel (6'1, MH), Megan Ortmeier (5'8, OH), Jessa Hellbusch (5'4, S), Jenna Byrd (6'2 RS), and Maddie Renner (5'3, DS).
Juniors Cierra Kluthe (5'10, OH) and Ally Pojar (5'10, MH) as well as Sophomore Sydney Emanuel (5'6, DS) return for NBC as well.
I think having the height and experience the Tigers have in these girls will help North Bend Central out this year tremendously.
I also think having the success the Tigers had in basketball last year will help this year's Volleyball team out a lot as well.
North Bend Central has done really well in Volleyball in past years, and cranked things up in basketball last season.
Now the Tigers have to turn things up a few notches in Volleyball, and be a power in both Volleyball and Basketball.
North Bend Central has to be a favorite to win the Conference in both sports this year I feel.
It could be a situation where the Tigers make state in both sports.
There's a long ways to go a lot of work to be done before that happens, but anything can certainly happen.
North Bend Central basically has everyone back from last year, and the Tigers are an experienced and veteran laden team.
I think that will help the Tigers going up against some of the younger teams in the Conference this season.
North Bend Central has been there and done that before, and this isn't the Tigers' first rodeo by any stretch of the imagination.
Last year was tough, but I think with a year of maturity and growth North Bend Central is well on their way to having a good and successful and winning season.
I don't see why the Tigers can't win anywhere from 20-25 matches this season.
Season Outlook:
North Bend Central opens up the season on September 3rd against Shelby-Rising City and Madison at the Shelby-Rising City Triangular.
I think the extra practice time and not starting the season until September 3rd really helps the Tigers.
North Bend Central needs to come out strong out of the gates and play well early though because the Tigers hit a tough stretch of games in mid-September.
NBC has Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family, the North Bend Invite, Stanton, Wisner-Pilger, Oakland-Craig, and West Point-Beemer all within a two-week stretch.
That will be a big stretch of matches for the Tigers, and we'll see how they fare in those two weeks.
Sterup says the team has high hopes for the season. "We are looking forward to a season where we can grow as a team. We have all of our returning starters back. Looking forward to starting out stronger than last year and staying strong. We have experience on the court this year which will make us a stronger more confident team going into this year."
I completely agree with Coach Sterup on that one.
Having everyone back should allow North Bend Central to get back to playing the type of Volleyball they're accustomed to.
Last year was one of those years where you lost a bunch of great players from arguably your best team in school history, and it was a rebuilding sort of year you could say.
That's not the case this year though, and I fully expect the Tigers to go out there and play well and find ways to win night in and night out.
I think North Bend Central will be one of those teams opponents fear and don't want to play.
The Tigers have to get back to playing tenacious, smash like Volleyball that gives opponents shivers and the jimmies.
North Bend Central has to put fear in their opponents just by walking into the gym and warming up.
The Tigers have to hit, pass, and serve the ball with authority and make good decisions on the fly.
Having good judgement on balls being in or out and communicating that is key and vital there's no doubt about it.
North Bend Central has to be unified, and play together as one.
If they do that then the Tigers can accomplish great things and go special places this season.
2019 North Bend Central Tigers Volleyball Schedule:
09/03/19 Madison Triangular (host: Shelby/Rising City)

Oakland-Craig looking for returners to lead them to good season
Team: Oakland-Craig
Mascot: Knights
Colors: Orange and White
Class: C-2
Head Coach: Chelsey Boden
2018 record: 13-19
Returning Starters: N/A
Overview:
Oakland-Craig returns quite a few players from last year's team that went 13-19. Head Coach Chelsey Boden.
"We have Josie Richards and Bailey Helzer, Mya Guzinski, and we also have Makenna Pearson, Rheanna Paul, Ashten Rennerfeldt. And then we have Kennedy Benne coming back, who missed the year last year due to a knee injury. So we have quite a few returners this year so it should be exciting."
Boden says the offseason was good as most of the girls were able to make most of their summer camps and leagues this summer.
Seniors lost to graduation last year include Dacey Nelson, Natalia McNeill, Jena Gardeman, and Aileen Quintero.
The Knights lost a couple of key players in Nelson and McNeill, but return a good strong core.
I felt Oakland-Craig played their best Volleyball towards the end of last season, and look for that to carry over into this year.
I look for big things from Bailey Helzer and am excited to see what she can do in her sophomore year.
I also look for Benne to do big and great things after missing all of last season.
I think this year has a chance to be really good for the Knights.
I feel Oakland-Craig can be a top contender in the East Husker Conference given all who they bring back, and can go on to have a mighty fine and nice season.
The Knights have to get the most out of themselves and each other, and play up to their potential all year.
Oakland-Craig has to play hard and smart at all times, and give 100% effort.
The Knights have to want it more than their opponents and must outwork them as well.
Oakland-Craig has to be a good passing, hitting, and serving team, and must limit and minimize unforced errors that would result in the Knights beating themselves.
I think playing at a high level and being consistent are two keys to Oakland-Craig having success this season.
Season Outlook:
Oakland-Craig hopes to be one of the top teams in the East Husker Conference this season. Boden says the conference should be really good again this year.
"We've had a really rock solid conference these last few years. And I think that's still going to be the same. A lot of challengers out there. And I really look forward to seeing how the conference falls this year."
The Knights open up the season at Howells-Dodge on August 29th.
I think that first match is super key and critical for Oakland-Craig.
The Jaguars are in transition a bit with a new Coach and a veteran team like Oakland-Craig has to go in there and find a way to win.
The Knights simply have to tell themselves in that match and in other matches throughout the season that losing is simply not an option.
Oakland-Craig has to come out and play to win each and every time they take to the floor.
The Knights have to play well night in and night out and simply refuse to lose.
Oakland-Craig had a spectacular basketball season last year, and I feel that has a chance to carry over into this Volleyball season.
The Knights have a chance to do a lot of good things I feel, and I think 20+ wins is not out of the realm of possibility.
Oakland-Craig has a lot of veteran experience, and that could serve them very well this year.
It's a season in which a lot of teams in the conference are young so the Knights have to use that to their advantage.
Oakland-Craig has to be ready to play every match and has to have good solid play at the net and in the back row.
The Knights need to have a positive I can do attitude at all times this season, and be willing to learn and grow.
Oakland-Craig has to take care of all the teams they're supposed to beat, and knock off some of the traditional powers on their schedule.
The Knights have a tough schedule, but should be one of those teams no one wants to face.
2019 Oakland-Craig Knights Volleyball Schedule:

Stanton looking to continue winning ways this season
Team: Stanton
Mascot: Mustangs
Colors: Orange and Black
Class: C-2
Head Coach: Tracy Kuester-Burtwhistle (5th season) (126-16 record)
2018 record: 31-2 (beat Superior in 3rd place match at State)
Returning Starters: 3
Overview:
The Stanton Volleyball Team is coming off what was arguably the greatest season and four-year run in school history, going 31-2 and taking 3rd place at the State Tournament.
The Mustangs graduated a ton of talent from that team, including Jaiden Hartl, Jessie Brandl, Makenna Espinoza, Liz Christensen, Bree Burtwhistle, and Reba Waskowiak.
Three of those girls are now playing College Volleyball, and you hope what they taught the then underclassmen now main contributors leads to more success for Stanton this season.
The Mustangs bring back three starters, including Jasmine Kment (5'4, SR L), Kaylee Matthies (5'9, SR MH), and Ellie Locke (5'8, JR RSH).
Head Coach Tracy Kuester-Burtwhistle says she looks forward to what Kment can do this season. "Played as a defensive specialist position for the Mustangs last season and we look forward to the experience and knowledge she gained last year to impact the back court this upcoming 2019 season."
She adds Matthies gained a lot of valuable experience last year. "Returner 1st year starter Kaylee as the season progressed last year really built her confidence as a middle on attacking the ball and blocking. We look forward to see her potential this season."
Kuester-Burtwhistle says the team expects great things from Locke this year. "Ellie a returning starter last year at RSH had 74 kills, off season she has moved to OH position and we are looking at her as a great contributor when we need something to happen, we could count on her."
Other possible contributors include Emily Colwell (5'6, SR S/RSH), Morgan Remm (5'3, SR S), Marissa Remm (5'4, SR DS), Mylie Otto (5'9, SR MH), Frankie Hansen (5'7, SR RSH), Kinley Pohlman (5'8, SO RSH/OH), Sylvia Cunningham (6'0, SO MH/RSH), and Olivia Cunningham (5'9, FR OH/RSH).
I don't know if Stanton will be as good this year as they have been the last four years, but I fully expect the Mustangs to still be good and competitive.
I think a State berth or at least another postseason run is possible for this squad.
I feel there's quite a bit of talent across the board that can produce quite a few wins for the Mustangs this season.
I don't know if Stanton will be nearly as dynamic or flashy as they have been in the past, but I still expect the Mustangs to be a solid ball club.
I feel this is a team that will only get better as the year goes on.
Season Outlook:
Stanton opens up the season on August 29th at home against West Point-Beemer and Battle Creek in a Triangular.
Of course the Mustangs beat Battle Creek at State last year, and the Braves are kind of a rival you could say.
The Cadets graduated quite a few girls from last year and have a new coach so it will be interesting to see what happens.
I could be there being splits across the board that night just given the nature of all three teams and the season just starting.
Kuester-Burtwhistle has this preseason assessment of her team. "The 2019 Mustang team will be returning 3 starters that will give us some experience to our line up. Our focus this year will be the pass and serve game, which our players do an exceptional job at that. We look forward to be a competitive team in Class C2."
The early part of the schedule appears to be the toughest for Stanton.
I could see the Mustangs struggle early and then pick things up midseason and make a run.
I think it might take Stanton some time to get things figured out, but I fully expect the Mustangs to continue their winning ways of the past.
If Stanton can just get into a Sub-State game then lookout.
It's one game to go to State, and a program the caliber of Stanton can definitely win one game to go to state no matter who it is against or where it is at.
I fully expect this year's Mustang team to not go down without a fight this year.
I think you will see Stanton fight until the very end of matches this year, win or lose.
I feel the Mustangs have a chance to surprise some people this year if you would want to even call it that given all the success they've had.
I feel Stanton will be a contender in the East Husker Conference as well once that tournament rolls around towards the end of the season.
It's never easy replacing the type of talent the Mustangs had in last year's senior class, but I'm willing to bet this year's team will do everything they can to keep Stanton's winning ways going.
2019 Stanton Mustangs Volleyball Schedule:
08/29/19 Battle Creek Triangular (host: Stanton)
08/29/19 West Point-Beemer Triangular (host: Stanton)
09/05/19 Madison Triangular (host: Clarkson/Leigh)

GACC looking to be improved from last year
Team: Guardian Angels Central Catholic
Mascot: Bluejays
Colors: Blue and White
Class: C-2
Head Coach: Kate Hagemann
2018 record: 12-16
Returning Starters: N/A
Overview:
GACC looks to improve upon last year's 12-16 record. Head Coach Kate Hagemann says the Bluejays lost a few girls from last year.
"Last year we graduated two seniors. So Ally Plagge was one of our back row players, and Angela Jansen played the right side for us. So beyond those two and then also Brandi Doernemann was one of our varsity players who will not be back this year due to she tore her ACL last year during basketball season."
Hagemann says everyone else returns with a strong group of incoming players.
Key returners include Brooklyn Bailey, Evelyn Wooldrik, Erica Engelmeyer, Hanna Knobbe, Megan Plagge, Meghan Brunsing, Reece Snodgrass, and Sophia Hass.
With lots of returning players I fully expect the Bluejays to do well this year.
I think you will see GACC turn a lot of their close losses last year into wins this year.
I think the Bluejays have a good chance to have a winning record again this year, and perhaps make a Sub-State match and go to the State Tournament.
This is a team and program that expects greatness and expects to win, and these players and athletes always put the time in.
I'm excited to see what a year of growth and maturity from these girls does for this year's team.
GACC was pretty young last year, and now these girls are a year older and a year more mature and seasoned so they should be ready to do great things.
This is a very proud program with very high expectations, and I look for the Bluejays to live up to those expectations this season.
I don't know if GACC will win something like 30 matches like they did 4-5 years ago, but I think the Bluejays can win something like 15-20 matches at minimum this season.
It will be interesting to see what happens this year because I feel GACC has the potential to be very good.
Losing Doernemann definitely hurts, but I feel there is so much talent and athleticism on this team, and think the Bluejays will be just fine.
It should be a very fun season for GACC, and I'm sure they can't wait to get the season started.
Season Outlook:
GACC opens up the season at home on August 29th against David City Aquinas.
"Oh it'll be a great match and a great way to start the year. It's kind of a different schedule for us. We almost always started our year with the Wisner/Pender Northeast Nebraska Classic. But just with the change in the Volleyball schedule this year we moved a couple of duals ahead of that," Hagemann said.
Hagemann says the Bluejays lost in five sets to the Monarchs in David City last year.
She adds consistency is a key again this season just like it was last year.
GACC lost a lot of five set matches last year, and I get the sense that the Bluejays are very hungry, determined, and motivated to turn those close losses into wins this year.
Hagemann retook the program over last year for Paul Steuter, and I feel things will get returned around for GACC this season.
I thought last year's team was very competitive and good, but just couldn't get over the hump in some matches.
I look for those learning experiences to translate into wins and success on the court this year.
The Bluejays are accustomed to playing in the State Tournament, and I think GACC has a shot to get back to Lincoln this year.
The Bluejays have to come strong out of the gates, and play good consistent Volleyball all season long.
I feel that winning the close matches will be the key to GACC's success this year.
The Bluejays will probably beat and possibly sweep all the teams they're supposed to beat, but winning those tough, close matches will make all the difference for GACC I feel.
The schedule looks pretty tough, but I don't think it's any different than any other year for the Bluejays.
GACC just has to focus on themselves more so than what the other team is doing.
The Bluejays can be very good this year, in my opinion, but closing and finishing off matches will be vital to their success I would say.
